We met one evening at the Track. During the usual mid-week training spin we noticed a new face. He was not familiar. Neither was his posture. A strong wide stride, slim, agile, fast. His feet coming well up his back. A typical African athlete.

Another promising athlete who is frequently hitting the news is Simon Spiteri. Just 15 years of age he is enjoying a fabulous season. Sunday 6 May was another D-Day for Simon since he completed a veritable treble in road running having won the Mellieha 2 k in 6’32! This followed the first placing in Xaghra Gozo, a week before having completed the 4 K run in 12’16, and yet another first in Pembroke 3K in 10’41. A veritable Champion which makes us all at Saint Patrick’s really proud. |

Jonathan’s experience in running started off for the first time when he ran a long distance of 1000 m around the school premises! A school colleague pushed him along to run his first half marathon in 1991. His longest runs used to be 54 laps around the corner flags of a sandy football pitch. Knee injury hindered him from going further, but instead he started playing football, sometimes polishing the reserves’ bench. |
